TELIK ANNOUNCES UPDATED POSITIVE RESULTS FROM PHASE 2 TRIAL OF TELCYTA IN COMBINATION WITH CARBOPLATIN

Palo Alto, CA, - October 4, 2004 – Telik, Inc. (Nasdaq: TELK) reported additional positive data from a multicenter Phase 2 trial of TELCYTA™ (TLK286) administered in combination with carboplatin in platinum refractory or resistant ovarian cancer. The participating institutions are the Harvard affiliated hospitals including the Massachusetts General Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital , and the MD Anderson Cancer Center. The data were reported at the Tenth Biennial International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) meeting in Edinburgh , Scotland .

A total of 53 patients with documented platinum refractory or resistant ovarian cancer have been enrolled in the trial. At the time of analysis, 26 patients are evaluable for efficacy; 27 patients are too early to evaluate. The objective response rate by RECIST is 54%, including 4 complete responses and 10 partial responses that have been independently reviewed. Complete and partial responses were observed in patients at all participating institutions including the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The overall disease control rate is 73%, and the Kaplan-Meier estimate of median progression-free survival is 25.6 weeks. The TELCYTA/carboplatin combination is well tolerated, and no new or unanticipated toxicities have been observed.

“Women with platinum refractory or resistant ovarian cancer have a poor prognosis and represent a significant unmet medical need,” said Carolyn Krasner, M.D., of the Massachusetts General Hospital , Instructor in Medicine at the Harvard Medical School , and co-principal investigator of the study. “This trial has demonstrated that the TELCYTA/carboplatin combination is an active regimen in this patient population, and further studies are warranted.”

Based on this trial, Telik plans to initiate ASSIST-3 (ASsessment of Survival In Solid Tumors-3), a Phase 3 trial which will compare treatment with TELCYTA in combination with carboplatin to Doxil in the second-line therapy of platinum refractory or resistant ovarian cancer.
