TELIK ANNOUNCES PUBLICATION ON NOVEL APPLICATION OF TRAP DRUG DISCOVERY TECHNOLOGY

Palo Alto, CA, - September 21, 2004 - Telik, Inc. (Nasdaq: TELK) announced the publication of a study in which the company’s proprietary Target-Related Affinity Profiling (TRAP) drug discovery technology was used to identify novel small molecule lead compounds using the “affinity fingerprints” of approved drugs with known activity against a selected biological target. The study resulted in the identification of biologically active molecules that were structurally distinct from the known compounds, providing an advantage over methods that rely on chemical structure alone for modeling bioactivity. The study was published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry (J. Med. Chem. 2004, 47, 4875-4880).

“TRAP is a small molecule drug discovery technology that has been successfully used to efficiently discover active lead compounds against a wide range of biological targets in cancer and other serious diseases,” said Marc L. Steuer, senior vice president, business development. “For example, in the study just published, only 62 compounds were screened to identify several with significant bioactivity. In contrast, typical pharmaceutical high-throughput methods would require the screening of tens of thousands of compounds to potentially achieve a similar result. This study also demonstrates the potential to utilize TRAP to identify chemically distinct compounds that improve the activity and safety profile of known active compounds.”

TRAP is based on the principle that pharmaceutically active molecules work by interacting with a protein target. Telik measures the binding of a small molecule to a proprietary reference panel of proteins to create an “affinity fingerprint” for each compound. Telik scientists have created a database of profiles for tens of thousands of compounds, and use sophisticated computational tools to search the database and identify drug candidates more rapidly than with alternative technologies.

Telik, Inc. of Palo Alto , CA is a biopharmaceutical company working to discover, develop and commercialize small molecule drugs to treat serious diseases. The company’s most advanced drug development candidate is TELCYTA™ (TLK286), a tumor-activated small molecule product candidate that is in Phase 3 registration trials in advanced ovarian and non-small cell lung cancer. Telik’s product candidates were discovered using its proprietary drug discovery technology, TRAP, which enables the rapid and efficient discovery of small molecule drug candidates.
