South San Francisco, CA, February 12, 2003 Telik,
Inc. (Nasdaq: TELK) today announced that it has agreed to collaborate
with the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (Nashville, TN) to use
the company's proprietary drug discovery technology, TRAP, to discover
novel, pharmaceutically active small molecules for new cancer targets.
"My colleagues and I are pleased to work with Telik to accelerate
cancer drug discovery," said Carlos Arteaga, M.D., Professor
of Medicine and Cancer Biology and Director, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer
Center Breast Cancer Research Program. Dr. Arteaga also served as
Chairperson of the AACR-NCI-EORTC International Conference on Molecular
Targets and Cancer Therapeutics. "TRAP technology enables the
identification of active compounds by testing as few as 200 compounds
rather than thousands required for alternative methods. This drug
discovery technology may enable us to more rapidly find compounds
active against novel targets that arise from our very strong cancer
biology program here at Vanderbilt-Ingram, and thereby facilitate
the translation of our basic research for the benefit of cancer
patients."
Telik's TRAP collaborations exploit the unique efficiency of this
proprietary technology and provides an important source for the
company's cancer drug pipeline. Cancer institutions currently collaborating
with Telik include the Arizona Cancer Center at the University of
Arizona and Fox Chase Cancer Center.
TRAP enables the rapid and efficient discovery of small molecule
product candidates by taking advantage of the fundamental principle
that pharmaceutically active molecules work by interacting with
a protein target. Telik measures the binding of a small molecule
to a proprietary reference panel of proteins to create a profile
for each compound. Company scientists have created a database of
profiles for tens of thousands of compounds, and they use sophisticated
computational tools to search the database and identify drug candidates
more rapidly than with alternative technologies.
The Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center is the only Comprehensive Cancer
Center designated by the National Cancer Institute in Tennessee,
and one of only 39 nationwide. This designation, the highest ranking
awarded to cancer centers by the world's foremost authority on cancer,
recognizes research excellence in cancer causes, development, treatment
and prevention, as well as a demonstrated commitment to community
education, information and outreach. To learn more, please visit

About Telik
Telik, Inc. of South San Francisco, CA is a biopharmaceutical company
working to discover, develop and commercialize small molecule drugs
to treat serious diseases for which there is significant demand
for new therapies. The company's most advanced drug development
candidate is TLK286, a tumor activated small molecule drug that
is in Phase 2 clinical trials in ovarian, non-small cell lung, colorectal
and breast cancer. Telik's product candidates were discovered using
its proprietary technology, TRAP, which enables the rapid and efficient
discovery of small molecule drug candidates. Additional information
is available at www.telik.com.
You should not rely on forward-looking statements contained in
this press release, including statements regarding the potential
of the targets identified through this collaboration to treat cancer,
the ability of our TRAP technology to generate additional drug candidates,
or the potential for TLK286 in treating one or more types of cancer.
Telik can give no assurance with regard to these statements. The
drug targets and compounds selected under this collaboration will
require significant additional research prior to any clinical development.
The application of TRAP to additional new drug discovery may not
yield additional product candidates. To date, TLK286 has been tested
only in open-label uncontrolled clinical trials. Substantial additional
testing, including randomized, controlled clinical trials, will
be necessary prior to seeking regulatory approval to market TLK286,
and there can be no assurance that such trials will be initiated,
have a successful outcome, or that regulatory approval of TLK286
will be obtained. Telik is reliant on external manufacturing of
TLK286. More detailed information regarding factors that may cause
actual results to differ materially from the results expressed or
implied by statements in this press release may be found in Telik's
periodic filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Telik
assumes no obligation to update any information in this press release.
